In 'Battle Royal' the scene where all the men were scrappling for the money on the electric carpet symbolized false hope. What really 'excited [him]... were the gold pieces' (303). This symbolized the thought of freedom from slavery. Thinking that he could have a chance to grab some extra money, but leaving him electrocuted and with a few spare coins. This symbolized how the slaves thought that they would be freed and have just as many rights as the white people, but when slavery was abolished, they still were not treated as well as the white people.
Once the narrator looked closely at the coins, he figured out that they 'were brass pocket tokens advertising a certain make of automobiles' (306). This is like once slaves were set free, they still had to listen to the white man and follow him orders, like the abolishment of slavery, coins, barely meant anything at all.
This portion of the text helps to construct a storyline of American past and history.

Cathedral
The ending of the "Cathedral" is perfect for a short story because he begins the day scared and terrified that a blind man is going to be sleeping in his house to wanting to keep his eyes closed like he is blind. In the introduction the husband states that ' being blind bothers me' and he 'wasn't enthusiastic about his visit' (274).
Throughout most of the story he was uncomfortable around Robert and only tried to make small talk with him. But, by the end, he found he could connect with him through a level that is not verbal. The cathedral description brings him to connect with the blind man in a different way than what most people would think. 'His hand over [the husbands] hand' then drew the cathedral together (283).

This i believe
I believe that the number one comfort in life is your bed.
It is the one place where you can feel truly at home. Its one sanctuary from the outside world that someone can get lost in for hours at a time. I know i will curl up into my bed and pull the comforter around me like a feathery cocoon and find myself hours later in the same position in a dream like state.
The bed is something that brings happiness to think about. At night when i crawl into bed, my face just lights up with the joy of touching my silky sheets, smelling herbal essences on my pillow, and sinking into my mattress with the right sleep number. Sometimes tho, I find a little golden hairball from Bella that disturbs my bliss.
When I am sad, the one thing that will always brighten me up is my bed. When it seems like nothing could ever go right in the day, my bed changes that thought instantly.
Over the summer, I went out of town for two weeks. On the plane ride home, all that I could think about was seeing my friends and how great it would feel to sleep in my very own bed again. On vacation, people always complain about how the mattresses are too hard or too lumpy or smells all moldy at the hotel, and they always seem to wake up in an irritable mood. But the perfect mattress for someone always leaves them perfectly contempt in the morning.
Whenever my family stays at a motel, my dad always finds some reason to complain about his discomfort in the bed, and in the morning, we all just plug our ears to his complaining.
So, i believe that the one thing that completes life is your very own bed.

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do
- David Bowie Ground Control to Major Tom
Eleanor rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
- The Beatles Eleanor Rigby
